Featuring Whitman’s poetry and other readings from young poets.

May 4, 11 am -1 pm: Public Art Opening: “Pieces of Poetry”
Artist Courtney McCloskey’s mosaic celebrates three great authors from Fort Greene: Walt Whitman, Marianne Moore, and Richard Wright. Made of recycled glass and ceramic with contributions by students from neighborhood schools, the mosaic will be intalled in the plinth on the monument plaza.

More Or Less I Am is a music and theater piece drawn from Walt Whitman’s 1855 “Song of Myself”, involving 16 actors, singers and instrumentalists, that vitalizes Whitman’s call to us, then and now.

May 31, 3:00 - 5:00 pm: Walt Whitman Birthday Party!
Fort Green's own branch of the Brooklyn Public Library hosts a birthday party for Walt, with ice cream, cup cakes, and a special community reading "Crossing Brooklyn Ferry" at 4:00 pm.

May 31, 3:30 – 4:30 pm: Walt Whitman at 200 with the Downtown Brooklyn Partnership and the Brooklyn Public Library
The Phil Woodmore singers perform music from Walt Whitman’s era and poets Dorianne Laux, Joseph Millar, and other invited guests read “Crossing Brooklyn Ferry”. This event occurs simultaneously with readings of the poem at each of Brooklyn Public Library’s 59 branches.

June 6, 7:30 PM: Karen Karbeiner and Brian Selznick present Whitman’s Live Oak ,With Moss
A Whitman scholar and a famed illustrator discuss their new project: an edition of twelve previously little-known Whitman poems on the theme of same-sex love.
