Young Readers Book Group with Jessica discusses
All Summer Long and Camp
Led (virtually!) by Greenlight co-owner Jessica, our Young Readers Book Group is geared toward kids ages 9 to 12, and reads great contemporary and classic chapter books. Parents are welcome (but not required) to attend. For June, the group discusses graphic novels about friendship and summer camp: Eisner Award winner Hope Larson’s All Summer Long and bestselling author-illustrator Kayla Miller’s Camp. Thirteen-year-old Bina has a long summer ahead of her in Larson’s All Summer Long. She and her best friend, Austin, usually do everything together, but he's off to soccer camp for a month, and he's been acting kind of weird lately anyway. How Bina and Austin rise above their growing pains and reestablish their friendship and respect for their differences makes for a touching and funny coming-of-age story. In Miller’s Camp, Olive is sure she’ll have the best time at summer camp with her friend Willow – but while Olive makes quick friends with the other campers, Willow struggles to form connections and latches on to the only person she knows – Olive. Miller has created an emotional and honest story about navigating new experiences, learning to step outside one’s comfort zone, and the satisfaction of blazing your own trails.
