Reading and conversation

Two up-and-coming young authors – Tova Mirvis (The Ladies Auxiliary, The Outside World) and Lara Vapnyar (There Are Jews In My House, Broccoli) present their novels of connection, estrangement and chance encounters with a joint reading and discussion. In Mirvis’ novel Visible City, three couples find their paths intersecting in their Manhattan neighborhood, forcing them all to weigh the comfort of stability against the costs of change. The novel has been praised by fellow authors including Joshua Henkin, who writes "Visible City reminds us how strangers become intimates and intimates grow estranged. Tova Mirvis writes with passion and unflinching honesty about the small grievances that accumulate until we no longer know the people we love." Lara Vapnyar’s novel The Scent of Pine follows a frustrated community college professor whose chance encounter with an old schoolmate catapults her into memories of their summer together as counselors at a camp in the backwoods of Russia during the massive cultural changes of perestroika in the 1980s. Novelist Jennifer Gilmore writes “The Scent of Pine is an important novel that questions—and miraculously answers—what it really means to be free.”
