Book Launch: Tad Friend presents In the Early Times: A Life Reframed
In conversation with Alexandra Styron
Almost everyone yearns to know their parents more thoroughly before they die, to solve some of those lifelong mysteries. Maybe, just maybe, those answers will help you live your own life. But life doesn’t stop to wait. Greenlight welcomes acclaimed New Yorker staff writer Tad Friend to our Fort Greene events stage for the first time to launch his “dazzling” (John Irving) new memoir, which explores Friend's relationship with his dying father, a brilliant academic known as “Day.” When he finds his father’s journal, he discovers a trove of passionate confessions that reveals a man entirely different from the exasperatingly logical father he knew Day to be. As Friend grapples with being a husband and a father himself—even as he tries to grasp who he is as a son--he finds himself careening between these two momentous stages of life. Friend joins us in conversation with author Alexandra Styron (Reading My Father) for an evening that will probe the shifting tides of memory and the unsteady ground on which every family rests.
