Stephen Shames and Ericka Huggins present Comrade Sisters: Women of the Black Panther Party
With special guest Denise Oliver-Velez
Many of us have heard these three words: Black Panther Party. Some know the Party’s history as a movement for the social, political, economic and spiritual upliftment of Black and indigenous people of color—but to this day, few know the story of the backbone of the Party: the women. Combining photos by Stephen Shames and text from Ericka Huggins, as well as from more than 50 other contributors, Comrade Sisters tells the stories of these women building communities and enacting social justice behind the scenes. Join Shames and Huggins, along with former Black Panther Party member Denise Oliver-Velez, on Flatbush Ave. for an evening of photography and storytelling with Shames and Huggins to celebrate the release of this powerful, momentous collection.
