Sandra Allen presents A Kind of Mirraculas Paradise: A True Story About Schizophrenia
In conversation with Meredith Talusan
Sandra Allen, writer and former Buzzfeed editor, presents A Kind of Mirraculas Paradise, a propulsive, experimental book that illuminates the experience of living with schizophrenia. In 2009, Sandra Allen’s uncle Bob mailed her his autobiography – sixty often incomprehensible pages that proclaimed to be a "true story" about being "labeled a psychotic paranoid schizophrenic," and that was accompanied with a plea to share his story. And in A Kind of Mirraculas Paradise Allen translates her uncle's autobiography, creating a gripping coming-of-age story while sticking to the facts as he shared them. Lacing Bob's narrative with chapters providing greater contextualization, Allen also shares background information about her family, the culturally explosive time and place of her uncle's formative years, and the vitally important questions surrounding schizophrenia and mental healthcare in America more broadly. Allen discusses her debut book in conversation with Meredith Talusan, Senior Editor at them magazine, followed by a signing and Q&A.
