Ron Howell presents Boss of Black Brooklyn: The Life and Times of Bertram L. Baker
In conversation with Jim Harney
Visual presentation and discussion

Ron Howell's Boss of Black Brooklyn presents a riveting and untold story about the struggles and achievements of Bertram L. Baker, the first black person to hold public office in Brooklyn. An immigrant to the United States from the Caribbean island of Nevis in 1915, Baker was elected to the New York state legislature in 1948, representing the Bedford Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn -- the first Nevisian to serve since Alexander Hamilton. A pioneer and a giant, Baker has a story that is finally revealed in intimate and honest detail by journalist Howell -- Baker's grandson. An important and long-overdue book, Boss of Black Brooklyn not only explores black politics and black organizations but also penetrates Baker’s inner life and reveals themes that resonate today: couples and families, place and ancestry, representation and gentrification. Howell presents his book about his pioneering grandfather with a reading, visual presentation, and discussion with Jim Harney, Assistant Editor at the Community News Group in Brooklyn.
