Book Launch: Robert Jones, Jr. presents The Prophets
In conversation with Kiese Laymon
Robert Jones, Jr., creator of the social justice social media community Son of Baldwin, joins Greenlight (virtually!) to celebrate the launch of his debut novel, The Prophets. This stunning and highly anticipated debut is the tale of the union between two enslaved young men on a Deep South plantation, the refuge they find in each other, and a betrayal that threatens their existence. With a spellbinding mix of lyricism, rawness, and authenticity that has earned comparisons to Toni Morrison, Ta-Nehisi Coates, and James Baldwin, Jones fiercely summons the voices of slaver and enslaved alike to tell the story of Samuel and Isaiah. As tensions build and the weight of centuries—of ancestors and future generations to come—culminates in a climactic reckoning, The Prophets masterfully reveals the pain and suffering of inheritance, but is also shot through with hope, beauty, and truth, portraying the enormous, heroic power of love. Kiese Laymon, the award-winning author of Heavy and How to Slowly Kill Yourself and Others in America, joins Jones in conversation at this special virtual book launch.
