Reading Around the World with Greenlight Bookstore
Co-hosted by 92Y
In a season where many of us are isolated in our homes, books offer a means of travel, escape, and empathy into other lives. Join the co-owners of Brooklyn’s Greenlight Bookstore, Rebecca Fitting and Jessica Stockton-Bagnulo, as they bring their curation skills to bear with a deep dive into contemporary fiction that’s also a tour of the globe—in all its cultural specificity, universal human experiences, and deep interconnectedness. Each month, prior to meeting online, everyone will read one of the thoughtfully selected books. During the online sessions, Rebecca and Jessica will lead discussions of recent contemporary novels that take readers to new worlds. For the August session, we’ll be discussing beloved bestselling novelist Isabel Allende’s long-awaited new novel, A Long Petal of the Sea, which brings to life the historical moment when poet Pablo Neruda helped thousands of refugees from the Spanish Civil War escape to Chile, and the lives of one family in a new land. Previously discussed books include Aravind Adiga’s Amnesty, Ali Araghi’s Immortals of Tehran, and An Yu’s Braised Pork.
