Reading Around the World with Greenlight Bookstore
Co-hosted by 92Y
In a season where many of us are isolated in our homes, books offer a means of travel, escape, and empathy into other lives. Join the co-owners of Brooklyn’s Greenlight Bookstore, Rebecca Fitting and Jessica Stockton-Bagnulo, as they bring their curation skills to bear with a deep dive into contemporary fiction that’s also a tour of the globe—in all its cultural specificity, universal human experiences, and deep interconnectedness. Each month, prior to meeting online, everyone will read one of the thoughtfully selected books. During the online sessions, Rebecca and Jessica will lead discussions of recent contemporary novels that take readers to new worlds. For the July session, we’ll be discussing An Yu’s debut novel Braised Pork, a cinematic evocation of contemporary middle-class urban China through a young woman’s journey of grief and empowerment. Throughout this program, we’ll also discuss A Long Petal of the Sea on August 25. Previously discussed books include Aravind Adiga’s Amnesty and Ali Araghi’s Immortals of Tehran.
Registration includes all four hardcover books, which will be sent directly to you. Shipping will take several days to a week so we encourage you to sign up early!
