Our nonfiction book group meets monthly to read and discuss the most fascinating topics in nonfiction. This month, the group reads Playing Indian by Philip J. Deloria. This provocative book explores how white Americans have used their ideas about Native Americans to shape national identity and how Indian people have reacted to these imitations of their native dress, language, and ritual. "Americans need Indians in order to define themselves as Americans," asserts Deloria. Written in a meticulous, lively, and at times humorous style, this multidisciplinary work is ideal for our Nonfiction Book Group.
