Introduction by Mieke Chew

Poet Octavio Paz wrote “To read New Directions publications is to open a window.” Founded in 1936 by James Laughlin, New Directions is the first American publisher of Borges, Paz, Neruda, and Tennessee Williams, and, more recently, of W.G. Sebald, Anne Carson, Roberto Bolaño, László Krasznahorkai, Clarice Lispector, and César Aira. Their poetry publications include giants from Pound, H.D., and W.C. Williams to Creeley, Susan Howe, Bernadette Mayer, Tomas Tranströmer, and Bei Dao. Greenlight joins the celebration of the 80th anniversary of the founding of this indispensable publisher with a party featuring short readings by some of New Directions’ leading contemporary authors, including MacArthur and Guggenheim fellow poet Anne Carson, "20 Under 40" novelist Rivka Galchen, genre-defying writer and translator John Keene, Man Booker International Prize-winning novelist László Krasznahorkai, Guggenheim fellow and poet Bernadette Mayer, and internationally renowned essayist and translator Eliot Weinberger.
