OFFSITE EVENT: Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration
Misty Copeland presents Life in Motion: An Unlikely Ballerina
Discussion & book signing
Tickets (book included) $18.50 or $75 VIP at greenlightbookstore.com
Misty Copeland’s memoir Life in Motion, just released in paperback, is the story of how the author makes history as the only African American soloist dancing with the prestigious American Ballet Theatre. At the time she discovered ballet at an after-school community center at age thirteen, Misty was living in a shabby motel room, struggling with her five siblings for a place to sleep on the floor. A true prodigy, she quickly performed feats unheard of for any classical dancer. But when Misty became caught between the world of ballet and the harsh realities of her own life, she had to choose to embrace both her identity and her dreams, and find the courage to be one of a kind. Copeland speaks about her story at Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration, a community development corporation serving Central Brooklyn, which works with low-income families providing a range of supports to help them see beyond their current circumstances to achieve economic self-sufficiency. Restoration also hosts a range of arts programs, including a multidisciplinary youth arts academy and several professional dance companies. An interview and discussion with Copeland will be followed by a book signing.
