Book Launch: Lloyd Handwerker presents Famous Nathan: A Family Saga of Coney Island, The American Dream, and the Search for the Perfect Hot Dog
In conversation with Kevin Baker
Beer reception to follow
In 1916 Nathan Handwerker, a young immigrant from Eastern Europe, leased five feet of counter space on a thoroughfare in bustling Coney Island. From those humble beginnings grew an empire, a celebrated eatery beloved by generations of devotees. In Famous Nathan, Lloyd Handwerker, Nathan’s grandson and the creator of the documentary film of the same name, explores the history behind Nathan’s Famous, including the founder’s impoverished childhood and his perilous journey to the United States in pursuit of the American Dream. Nathan’s devotion to quality, as well as his quickly growing business savvy, propelled him to incredible levels of achievement -- but with success came the trials and tribulations every family business must face, as rivalries threatened to tear apart the empire he created. Handwerker talks about the history of one of New York’s most iconic brands at tonight’s event with Kevin Baker, author of several bestselling fiction and nonfiction works on New York history including Dreamland. The discussion is followed by a reception with Coney Island Lager to celebrate the book’s launch, just in time for Nathan’s 100th summer at the Coney Island boardwalk.
