Leanne Brown presents Good and Cheap: Eat Well on $4/Day
In conversation with Naima Sullivan of Food Bank for NYC
All purchases benefit Food Bank for NYC

While studying food policy as a master’s candidate at NYU, Leanne Brown asked a simple yet critical question: How well can a person eat on the $4 a day given by SNAP, the U.S. government’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, informally known as food stamps? The answer, as laid out in Brown’s cookbook Good and Cheap, is surprisingly well. In addition to creating nutritious recipes that maximize every ingredient and use economical cooking methods, Ms. Brown gives tips on building a pantry, mastering staples and extras, and how to make fundamentally smart, healthful food choices. Brown is working to make her cookbook available to families who need it most with a fundraising campaign and free PDFs of the book available online, and her publisher Workman is working with independent bookstores to match each book purchased with a donation to a nonprofit working with hunger and poverty. Greenlight is honored to work with Food Bank for New York City, the city’s major hunger-relief organization working to end hunger throughout the five boroughs for more than 30 years, to get Good and Cheap in the hands of organizers, facilitators, and families. Food Bank for NYC’s Associate Director of Community Nutrition, Naima Sullivan, talks with Brown about her book and the surrounding issues, followed by free samples of tasty treats from the recipes in the book. All copies of Good and Cheap purchased at Greenlight at tonight’s event and through the end of 2015 will be matched one-to-one with a donation to Food Bank!
