Kyung-sook Shin and Anton Hur present Violets
Greenlight is honored to welcome to our virtual stage—calling in live from Seoul, Korea—celebrated Korean author and Man Asian Literary Prize winner Kyung-sook Shin and acclaimed translator and PEN Translates and PEN/Heim grantee Anton Hur, celebrating their joint achievement in the English translation of Violets, newly published by Feminist Press. San is twenty-two and alone when she happens upon a job at a flower shop in Seoul’s bustling city center. Haunted by childhood rejection, she stumbles through life—painfully vulnerable, stifled, and unsure. Barely registering to others as she desperately searches for both autonomy and attachment in the unforgiving reality of contemporary Korean society, she stumbles upon a curious cast of characters over the course of this haunting, atmospheric tale that explores misogyny, erasure, and repressed desire in the ruthless milieu of 1990s South Korea. Join us (virtually) for a very special reading and conversation both interpreted and moderated by Hur.
