In 2018, having escaped her life in Mississippi, a woman pushes through the ruin of the Roman Colosseum, hunting for a direction of her own. In 1854, having been indentured as punishment for her misbehavior, a second woman, connected across time to the other, pushes through the jungle of the Roman Colosseum, searching for new ways to use her hands. With a list of seemingly minor plants and their uses as her frame, Katy Simpson Smith's novel, The Weeds, is a lush page-turner about science and survival, the roles women are given and have taken from them, and the lives they make for themselves. Joining Katy on the Greenlight stage is Samantha Hunt (The Unwritten Book) for a live reading, conversation, and Q&A.
