Following a catastrophic and scandalous accident, a young woman is sent away to boarding school, where she encounters a charismatic teacher who marks her as special. The series of shattering events that follow – and the system that fails to protect her – leave her with disastrous, immediate, and lifelong consequences. Walbert limns the all-too-common violations of vulnerability and aspiration in the lives of young women in this suspenseful short novel, which has received praise from Ann Packer, Tom Perrotta, and Lauren Groff. Walbert presents her new book, selected for Greenlight’s First Editions Club, in conversation with Joan Silber, award-winning author of Improvement, followed by a signing, Q&A, and wine reception.
