Jordan Calhoun presents Piccolo Is Black: A Memoir of Race, Religion, and Pop Culture
In conversation with Laura Bassett
Greenlight is delighted to welcome culture writer and Lifehacker editor-in-chief Jordan Calhoun to present his debut memoir. Like most Black kids who grew up without diverse representation, Calhoun learned the skill of assigning race to fictional characters. Piccolo, Panthro, Demona, Ursula...he could recognize a Black character when he saw one. He lived in an all-Black city, went to an all-Black school, and could identify characters whose struggles informed his understanding of the Black experience in America. Reminding us that entertainment has value and impact in forming our identities, Piccolo Is Black is Calhoun's homage to the characters he identified with and loved and an honest, thought-provoking, and often hilarious coming-of-age memoir that celebrates Black identity in America. Calhoun will be joined live in conversation at our Fulton St. store by Laura Bassett, editor-in-chief of Jezebel.
