Joan Lester presents Mama’s Child
In conversation with editor Malaika Adero
Author and journalist Joan Lester explores the deeply entrenched conflicts between a white mother and her biracial daughter in her new novel Mama’s Child. The novel tells the story of an idealistic young white woman who marries an African American man she meets as a civil rights worker in the South, but finds that the tensions of their married life in San Franciso drive them apart. When they divorce, their biracial daughter feels her already challenged sense of self destabilizing, and must ask herself if she is black or white, her father’s daughter or her mother’s. Lester talks about her book and the surrounding issues with her editor at Simon & Schuster, Malaika Adero.
