Book Launch: Ibi Zoboi presents Pride
In conversation with Elizabeth Acevedo
Reception to follow
From National Book Award finalist Ibi Zoboi, author of the critically acclaimed novel American Street, comes Pride, a gorgeous retelling of Pride and Prejudice for young adults, set in Bushwick, Brooklyn, and featuring all characters of color. Zuri Benitez has pride: Brooklyn pride, family pride, and pride in her Afro-Latino roots. But pride might not be enough to save her rapidly gentrifying neighborhood from becoming unrecognizable. When the wealthy Darcy family moves in across the street, Zuri wants nothing to do with their two teenage sons, even as her older sister, Janae, starts to fall head over heels for the charming Ainsley. She especially can’t stand his judgmental and arrogant brother, Darius. But when Zuri and Darius are forced to find common ground, their initial dislike shifts into an unexpected understanding. Pride skillfully balances issues surrounding cultural identity, class and gentrification with the magical delights of friendship and first love in a vibrant and innovative reimagining of the beloved classic. Zoboi talks about her book with Elizabeth Acevedo, poet and author of the acclaimed YA novel The Poet X, followed by a reception to celebrate the book’s launch.
