Fiction Book Group with Alexis
Discussing Hamnet by Maggie O'Farrell
Hosted by our neighbors at Die Stammkneipe Brooklyn (710 Fulton St.) and led by former Greenlight general manager Alexis, our fiction book group meets monthly to discuss paperback fiction, reading broadly in contemporary fiction with the occasional diversion into classics. For September, the group discusses Hamnet, the bestselling and National Book Critics Circle Award-winning novel by Maggie O'Farrell. England, 1580: The Black Death creeps across the land, an ever-present threat, infecting the healthy, the sick, the old and the young alike. A young Latin tutor—penniless and bullied by a violent father—falls in love with an extraordinary, eccentric young woman. Once the couple settles on Henley Street in Stratford-upon-Avon, she becomes a fiercely protective mother and a steadfast, centrifugal force in the life of her young husband, whose career on the London stage is just taking off when his beloved young son succumbs to sudden fever. Join our Fiction Book Group for a spirited discussion of this speculative novel about Shakespeare's life "so gorgeously written that it transports you" (Boston Globe).
Book group meetings will be held in DSK's private meeting space; enter through the bar. Drinks and food available for purchase; one item purchase minimum is encouraged!
