Brian Selznick & Karen Karbiener present Walt Whitman’s Live Oak, with Moss

Bestselling author and Caldecott Award–winning illustrator Brian Selznick publishes his first ever adult title in this book of never-before-seen Walt Whitman poetry, just in time for the poet’s 200th birthday. The poems in Live Oak, with Moss explore the theme of same-sex love as Whitman reflects on his attractions and affections for other men, and Selznick, who has been greatly influenced by Whitman’s work, brings these poems to life with more than 100 pages of original images. An afterword by Whitman scholar Karen Karbiener further illuminates these poems and their contemporary significance. Karbiener and Selznick present the poet’s life and secret love poems with a visual presentation and discussion in Whitman’s favorite Brooklyn neighborhood.
