Book Launch: Alexia Arthurs presents How to Love a Jamaican
In conversation with Glory Edim
Wine reception to follow
Debut author Alexia Arthurs launches How to Love a Jamaican a vibrant, lyrical new collection of short stories of the Jamaican diaspora, hailed by Zadie Smith as “kaleidoscopic… a thrilling debut.” Tenderness and cruelty, loyalty and betrayal, ambition and regret: Alexia Arthurs navigates these tensions to extraordinary effect in her debut collection about Jamaican immigrants and their families back home. Sweeping from close-knit island communities to the streets of New York City and midwestern university towns, these eleven stories form a portrait of a nation, a people, and a way of life. Carmen Maria Machado, author of Her Body and Other Parties, says, “I am utterly taken with these gorgeous, tender, heartbreaking stories. Alexia Arthurs is a witty, perceptive, and generous writer, and this is a book that will last.” Arthurs presents her debut collection in conversation with Glory Edim of Well-Read Black Girl, followed by a wine reception to celebrate the book’s launch.
