Book Launch: Albert Samaha presents Never Ran, Never Will: Boyhood and Football in a Changing American Inner City
In conversation with coach Chris Legree
Moderated by Heben Nigatu
The championship youth football team the Mo Better Jaguars are the pride of Brownsville, Brooklyn -- a neighborhood often characterized by economic pain, crime, and a sense that progress belongs to other people, yet fighting to keep its unique, intimate culture strong. Journalist Albert Samaha's book Never Ran, Never Will (named for a Brownsville motto) tells the story of the Jaguars and the children who grow and change as they enter this world. Charismatic and vulnerable and hardening all at once, the players' stories of learning about manhood, teamwork, and certain hard truths about American life chip away at the myth that the norms and values of low-income communities perpetuate poverty. Samaha is joined by Jaguars coach Chris Legree for a conversation about what the Jaguars mean for Brownsville, and what their story reveals about Brooklyn and America’s inner-city neighborhoods, moderated by Heben Nigatu, writer and co-host of Buzzfeed podcast Another Round. A reception follows to celebrate the book's launch.
