Black Lives Matter: A Message and a Donation Plan from Greenlight Bookstore

June 3, 2020

We share in our city and our country's outrage at racial injustice and violent policing. We watch in horror as George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, and Breonna Taylor become talked about as if they're statistics, not humans, added to a too-long list of Black lives lost.

We believe, absolutely, that protesting in this moment is a right and necessary response to unacceptable methods of policing, conveying the urgent need for change. We also worry for the safety of our friends, loved ones and neighbors massed in the streets in an ongoing pandemic.  Please be safe if you can. We care about you. We care about Fort Greene, Prospect Lefferts Gardens, Brooklyn, New York City. We live here, we work here, you are our neighbors, you are our people.

In support of all the work that needs to be done, Greenlight will be donating 10% of our online sales from May 29 to June 5 to the Legal Aid Society. We believe in supporting national causes on a local scale, and the Legal Aid Society is filling a need here in New York City, ensuring that everyone has access to legal support if they need it, and they are doing so by prioritizing diversity, equity, and inclusion in their own organization. They lead by example and we're honored to support their work.

Thank you for continuing to teach us how to go forward as your Brooklyn bookstore.  Thank you for your work, your interest, and your support.  We are here for you today, and we hope to work together for a better tomorrow.

Followup note: thanks to the support of our customers during the donation period, Greenlight was able to donate $4,000 to The Legal Aid Society, and an additional $2,934.66 to the Equal Justice Initiative.  Thank you for partnering with us to support the work of these important organizations.
