OFFSITE EVENT: Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration
Joe Brewster and Michèle Stephenson present Promises Kept: Raising Black Boys to Succeed in School and in Life

On February 3rd, 2014, PBS’s acclaimed POV series aired American Promise, the award-winning documentary by Joe Brewster and Michèle Stephenson, middle-class African-American parents in Brooklyn who turn their cameras on their son, Idris, and his best friend, Seun, to chronicle the boys’ divergent paths from kindergarten through high school graduation. The film has galvanized early audiences around the complex questions it poses about the struggle to raise black boys and close the black male achievement gap. Joe and Michele’s book, Promises Kept, tackles those questions head on, revealing a world of dedicated researchers who have not just identified the reasons for the gap, but have come up with innovative and often counterintuitive solutions to close it. In Promises Kept, Joe and Michèle have brought together those solutions – along with lessons learned from raising their own sons – in an unprecedented, deeply researched guide for parents, educators, and anyone with a role in raising a black boy. Greenlight is honored to partner with community development corporation Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration to present this evening’s discussion and book signing at Restoration Plaza.
