Greenlight Bookstore Donates to Hurricane Sandy Relief

Greenlight Bookstore, located in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, was fortunate to suffer no damage or loss of power as the result of Hurricane Sandy. In fact, the store’s sales were strong in the week following the storm, as neighborhood residents shopped for books while waiting for power and transportation to return. However, the store and its staff are keenly aware of the problems facing our neighbors in the eastern coastal neighborhoods of Brooklyn and the surrounding areas. Many are still suffering without power or have lost their homes and possessions, and the work of rebuilding will be a long-term challenge.

In support of the affected communities, and as a way of sharing our good fortune, Greenlight is donating 10% of sales from the week of the hurricane (October 30 to November 4) to hurricane relief efforts. As sales topped $39,000 during that period thanks to the support of our customers, the bookstore is able to donate a total of $4,000.

Greenlight is splitting its donation in two parts. $2000 will be donated to Occupy Sandy, a coordinated relief effort to distribute resources and volunteers to neighborhoods and people affected by Hurricane Sandy. $2000 will be donated to the Brooklyn Recovery Fund, a joint effort between the Brooklyn Community Foundation, the Office of the Brooklyn Borough President, and the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce to create a pooled fund to provide support to Brooklyn’s nonprofit organizations working with the communities and individuals most affected by Hurricane Sandy.

With Occupy Sandy addressing immediate needs with volunteers and daily supply deliveries, and the Brooklyn Recovery Fund focused on long-term rebuilding through existing nonprofits, Greenlight hopes to aid in serving the needs of Brooklyn’s residents and communities both now and in the future.

Greenlight is grateful to our customers for their support of the bookstore, and to all of the residents of Brooklyn and New York for their spirit of community in this crisis. We are honored to be a part of such a community, and proud to be able to give back as we have received.
