An Evening Celebrating Joan Murray
Farnoosh Fathi presents Drafts, Fragments, and Poems: The Complete Poetry
Readings by Simran Bansal, Corina Copp, Lucy Ives, Caroline Sasso, Emily Skillings, and others
The inventive and metaphysical poetics of Joan Murray, who died of a heart condition at age twenty-four, have impressed some of this century’s greatest poets, including W.H. Auden, who selected her as the winner of the 1947 Yale Series of Younger Poets Competition five years after her death. Unfortunately, Murray’s dazzling, raw poetry was significantly streamlined by a family friend editor prior to publication in Poems by Joan Murray: 1917-1942 (published in 1947), and though initially well received, Murray’s poems quickly faded from the public eye. Farnoosh Fathi has gone through the wild disarray of all of Murray's long-lost original manuscripts and reinstated her visionary lines, while also recovering much previously unpublished verse, and including a selection of her incandescent letters, as a well as a preface by John Ashbery. Fathi presents an evening celebrating Murray’s work, with readings of the poems by poets and admirers of all ages, followed by a Q&A.
