The Baker's Son, published by local independent press Akashic Books, is a memoir by Lowell Hawthorne, cofounder of Golden Krust Caribbean Bakery & Grill, the hugely successful Jamaican-owned and -run enterprise that reaches from Massachusetts to Florida. The Hawthornes, an immigrant family from rural Jamaica that relocated to the Bronx in the 1980s, created the the most lucrative Caribbean business ever established in America, and also established an innovative philanthropic foundation to give back to the community. Lowell Hawthorne, the award-winning president and CEO of Golden Krust, talks about his story and the Caribbean-American experience with Jessica Moore, curatorial fellow at the Museum of Contemporary African Diaspora Arts (MoCADA). The discussion will be followed by a reception featuring Golden Krust patties and other treats.
