Nights in the Gardens of Brooklyn by Harvey Swados
This lovely reissue of Swados' short stories is one of the reasons I love New York Review of Books. Though they were written in the 1950s, each of them, especially the title story, resonates like a recognizable dream of the city we know. The result is a sense of continuity with the past, and a renewed love for the houses and bars and gardens of Brooklyn. (Jessica)
