Orhan Pamuk presents Silent House
Moderated by Lila Azam Zanganeh
Tickets: $20
This fall, BAM launches Unbound, a series presented in partnership with Greenlight Bookstore that celebrates contemporary books and authors from across the literary spectrum. Attendees receive a 25% discount on the featured book on the night of the show. The Nobel Prize-winning writer Orhan Pamuk (Snow, My Name is Red) comes to BAM for the official New York launch of his newly translated second novel, Silent House (to be released on October 9). Published in his native Turkey in 1983, this moving story—about a family gathering that occurs the summer before the Turkish military coup of 1980—has never been published in English. Lila Azam Zanganeh, author of The Enchanter: An Adventure in the Land of Nabokov, will moderate this conversation.
Tickets available at BAM.org or at the BAM box office.

Greenlight Fiction Book Group discusses Brooklyn by Colm Toibin
Led by Greenlight staff, this book group discusses paperback fiction; in 2012, the group is focusing on award winners and under-the-radar gems. For September, the book group discusses Colm Toibin’s Brooklyn, winner of the 2009 PEN/Faulkner award for fiction. “One of the most unforgettable characters in contemporary literature” (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette), Eilis Lacey has come of age in small-town Ireland in the hard years following World War Two. When an Irish priest from Brooklyn offers to sponsor Eilis in America, she decides she must go, leaving her fragile mother and her charismatic sister behind. Eilis finds work in a department store on Fulton Street, and when she least expects it, finds love. Tony, who loves the Dodgers and his big Italian family, slowly wins her over with patient charm. But just as Eilis begins to fall in love, devastating news from Ireland threatens the promise of her future.
