Laura Anderson Barbata presents Transcommunality: Interventions and Collaborations in Stilt Dancing Communities

The work of Mexican-born artist Laura Anderson Barbata focuses on the social realm and often incorporates collaborations with traditional artisans; her pieces are included in various private and public collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art New York and the Museo de Arte Moderno Mexico City. Her new book Transcommunality examines a collaborative art project begun in Trinidad and Tobago, and highlights the way Anderson Barbata has integrated into her work The Brooklyn Jumbies, a group of stilt dancers from the West Indies and West Africa living in Brooklyn, and more recently Los Zancudos de Zaachila from Oaxaca, Mexico. The artist discusses her work at Greenlight with some of her artistic collaborators, including Najja Codrington and Ali Sylvester, founders of the Brooklyn Jumbies and collaborators on the Transcommunality project since 2006; artist Tim Rollins; Edward Sullivan, who wrote the book’s introduction; participating photographers Frank Veronsky, Stefan Falke, Stefan Hagen; and Liz Galván, Director of Centro de Diseño de Oaxaca.
