Items cannot be reserved or preordered, and are ONLY available from participating independent bookstores on April 29! Kids Activities: Reading Without Walls (both stores, 10 AM - 5 PM):
Reading Without Walls is a nationwide program celebrating reading and diversity by encouraging kids to read books they wouldn't normally choose on their own. Kids can take part in great Reading Without Walls activities in our kids section throughout the day, with cool take-homes and prizes too!
Literary Celebrity Photo Booth (Fort Greene store, 12 PM - 3 PM with authors):
Get your photo taken with awesome authors in our festive photo booth! Strike a pose, get crazy with props, or get your favorite book in the picture. Here's the schedule of celebs who will be holding court in the photo booth, but you can snap your own #bookstoreday pics all day!
12 PM - 1 PM: Tayari Jones, author of Leaving Atlanta, Silver Sparrow and An American Marriage (forthcoming February 2018)
1 PM - 2 PM: Rakesh Satyal, author of Blue Boy and No One Can Pronounce My Name (forthcoming May 2017)

Literary Cocktail Party: Authors as Bartenders (Prospect Lefferts Gardens, 6 PM - 8 PM):
Inspired by A Literary Cocktail Party, one of the exclusive IBD items, we're hosting a literary cocktail party in the PLG store, with authors as guest bartenders. Authors will be behind the bar serving their signature drink to partygoers, as well as chatting and signing books, for a party to cap off Independent Bookstore Day!
Hannah Tinti (Animal Crackers, The Good Thief, The Twelve Live of Samuel Hawley) serves Moscow Mules and other vodka concoctions
Joshua Jelly-Schapiro (Island People, Nonstop Metropolis) serves Caribbean-inspired rum drinks
Garnette Cadogan (Nonstop Metropolis, Freeman's) serves five-borough cocktails

What's the real cost of shrinking biodiversity? For Henderson, it's the annihilation of mystery and wonder. We know so little about even some of the most studied species on our planet that they might as well be mythical. Starting with a real creature, each chapter spirals into a blend of natural history and philosophy, delving into subjects like the evolution of vision and the nature of memory and illusions. Endlessly rich and compassionate, with hundreds of margin-notes and allusions to literature.
